Gasoline RON 98
RON 98 is the premium unleaded grade. Its higher octane rating resists knock in high-compression and turbocharged engines.

Octane is resistance to knock
The research octane number measures how far a gasoline can be compressed before it ignites on its own. Engines designed for 98 use that margin to run higher compression or boost pressure.
Refiners reach 98 by blending high-octane components such as reformate, alkylate and ethers. That makes it the costliest road grade and the smallest by volume.

What EN 228 requires
| Property | Reference | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Research octane number | 98 minimum | Resistance to knock under light load. It is the number shown at the pump. |
| Motor octane number | 88 minimum | Resistance to knock under heavy load and high engine speed. |
| Sulfur | 10 mg/kg maximum | Protects the catalytic converter. |
| Benzene | 1.0% by volume maximum | A health limit. Benzene is a carcinogen. |
| Aromatics | 35% by volume maximum | Aromatics raise octane but increase exhaust emissions. |
| Density at 15 °C | 720 to 775 kg/m³ | Converts volume to weight and indicates energy content. |
Limits are those published in the named standards, given for reference. The specification written into the sales contract governs.
How the grade is supplied
Super plus, RON 98
The premium grade sold under EN 228 across Europe.
E5 and E10
Blends with up to 5% or 10% ethanol by volume. The ethanol content must be stated.
Summer and winter grades
Vapor pressure is lower in summer to limit evaporation and higher in winter to aid cold starting.
Storage and shipping
- Cargo sizes. Medium-range product tankers carrying roughly 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes are the usual parcel.
- Volatility. Gasoline is the most volatile clean product. Vapor control applies at loading and discharge.
- Blendstocks. Cargoes often ship as blendstock and are finished with ethanol at the destination terminal.
- Inspection. An independent inspector normally samples and certifies the parcel at the loading port.
Storage and transport are provided by third-party terminal operators and carriers. We coordinate them. How storage and shipping are arranged
